Frequently asked questions

How does the unscrambler work?

It checks a large English word list and keeps every word that can be built from your letters, using each letter no more often than you typed it.

How do I use a blank tile or an unknown letter?

Type a question mark for each one. A ? can stand for any letter, so with the letters tse? you also find nest, rest and best, where the ? stands for n, r or b. The ? is a spare tile and not a fixed position, so use the Starts with and Ends with filters to set the position of a letter.

How do I get only anagrams?

Turn on Use all the letters. You then see only words that use every letter you typed, with the ? counted as one letter.

Can I use it to solve a five-letter word puzzle?

Yes. Type the letters you know, put a ? for each unknown one, turn on Use all the letters and add a Starts with or Contains filter. A list of words is only a helper. Which words a game accepts, and which answers it uses, can differ from this list.

Will every word be accepted in my game?

Not necessarily. The tool uses one large word list, and word games use their own dictionaries. Check the rules of your game before a challenge.

What do the numbers next to the words mean?

They are the points the word scores with standard Scrabble letter values. Blank tiles count as 0, so the score drops when you use a ?.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The word list is downloaded to your browser once and the search runs on your device. The letters you type never leave it.
