How to Unscramble Letters Into Words (Blanks, Anagrams and Filters)

Updated October 2026

You have seven letters on a rack, or a puzzle with a few known letters, and you want to know which words fit. A word unscrambler does the checking for you. This guide shows the settings that matter and how to read the results.

Unscramble letters in four steps

  1. Type your letters in the box. Use a question mark for a blank tile or a letter you do not know.
  2. Look at the list. Words are grouped by length, with the longest first.
  3. Add a filter if the list is too long.
  4. Copy the words you want, or all of them.

Blank tiles and unknown letters

A question mark stands for any letter. With the letters tse? the tool also finds nest, rest and best. Each question mark counts as one tile, so it adds one letter to the word, never more.

A blank is worth zero points in most tile games, so the score shown next to a word drops when the word needs one.

Anagrams: use all the letters

An anagram uses every letter exactly once. Turn on Use all the letters and only words as long as your input remain. For the letters tseplan that leaves planets and platens. Turn it off to see shorter words too.

Narrow the list with filters

  • Starts with: the word has to begin with these letters, handy for a board where a letter is already in place.
  • Ends with: the word has to end with these letters, such as ing or ed.
  • Contains: the word has to contain these letters next to each other, in this order.

The letters you type in the main box work as a pool of tiles. They do not have a fixed position. Use the filters whenever a letter must be in a certain place.

Using it for a five-letter puzzle

For a daily five-letter puzzle, type the letters you have found, add a question mark for each unknown letter, turn on Use all the letters and add Starts with or Contains. A finder only gives you candidates. Which words a puzzle accepts or uses as the answer depends on that game.

What a word finder cannot tell you

  • It uses one large English word list. Games use their own dictionaries, and some words in the list are rare or only valid in one of them.
  • Names, abbreviations and new slang are often missing.
  • The score uses standard Scrabble letter values and does not know about double or triple squares on a board.
  • Always check the rules of your game before you challenge a word.

Privacy

The word list is downloaded to your browser once, and the search is done on your device. The letters you type are not sent anywhere.
