Frequently asked questions
How do I write a pattern?
Type the letters you know in their places and a question mark for every unknown letter. The pattern c?t matches cat, cot and cut. Use an asterisk when you do not know how many letters are missing: ?a?e* finds words that have an a in the second place and an e in the fourth.
What is the difference between ? and *?
A ? is exactly one letter, so the word length is fixed. A * can be any number of letters, including none, so the length can vary.
How is this different from the Word Unscrambler?
The Word Unscrambler treats your letters as a pool of tiles in any order. The pattern solver keeps your letters in the exact places you typed them.
Will every answer fit my crossword?
Not necessarily. The list contains many ordinary words but not every name, phrase or clue answer. If nothing fits, check the pattern for a typo.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The word list is downloaded to your browser once and the search runs on your device.
