Frequently asked questions

What is the Flesch Reading Ease score?

It is a score based on sentence length and word length. Higher means easier: around 60 to 70 is plain English that most adults read comfortably, and below 30 is very hard going.

What does the grade level mean?

The Flesch-Kincaid grade level estimates the years of school in the US needed to follow the text. A grade of 8 means about 13 to 14 years old.

Does it work for Dutch or other languages?

No. The formulas and the syllable counting are made for English. Scores for other languages are not meaningful.

How accurate is it?

It is an estimate. Syllables are counted with a simple rule, so names, numbers and unusual words can shift the score. It also cannot judge whether a text is clear or correct. Use it as a prompt to shorten long sentences, not as a target.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser.
