What image should I start with?
A square image of at least 512 by 512 pixels with a simple shape. Fine detail and small text disappear at 16 pixels.

Why does the Apple icon have a white background?
iPhones do not show transparency on home screen icons and fill it with black. A white background avoids that.
My new favicon does not show. Why?
Browsers remember favicons for a long time. Reload the page with Ctrl+F5, or open the site in a private window.
