Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HEX and RGB?

They describe the same thing. RGB gives the amount of red, green and blue as three numbers from 0 to 255. HEX writes those same three numbers in base 16.

When is HSL useful?

HSL describes a colour by hue, saturation and lightness. That makes it easy to create a lighter or darker version of a colour by changing one number.

Why is CMYK marked as approximate?

CMYK is for printing, and the exact values depend on the printer, ink and paper. The numbers here are a standard calculation, good as a starting point but not a match for a printer's colour profile.
