Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
Weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Someone of 1.75 m and 70 kg has a BMI of 70 / (1.75 x 1.75) = 22.9.
What do the categories mean?
For adults, the World Health Organization uses: below 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 healthy weight, 25 to 29.9 overweight, 30 and above obesity.
What are the limits of BMI?
BMI only uses height and weight. It cannot tell muscle from fat, so it can be misleading for athletes, older people and during pregnancy. It is not suitable for children, who need age-specific charts.
