  • 100ContinueThe server received the start of the request. The client can go on and send the rest.
  • 101Switching ProtocolsThe server agrees to switch to another protocol, such as WebSocket.
  • 102ProcessingThe server is still working on the request and has no answer yet (WebDAV).
  • 103Early HintsThe server sends hints, such as files to preload, before the final answer.
  • 200OKThe request worked. The answer contains what was asked for.
  • 201CreatedThe request worked and a new resource was created.
  • 202AcceptedThe request was received and will be handled later.
  • 203Non-Authoritative InformationThe request worked, but a proxy changed the answer.
  • 204No ContentThe request worked and there is nothing to send back.
  • 205Reset ContentThe request worked. The client should reset the form or view.
  • 206Partial ContentOnly a part of the file is sent, as asked with a Range header.
  • 301Moved PermanentlyThe page has a new address for good. Search engines move to the new address.
  • 302FoundThe page is temporarily at another address. Keep using the old one.
  • 303See OtherGet the answer from another address, using a GET request.
  • 304Not ModifiedThe cached copy is still good, so nothing is sent again.
  • 307Temporary RedirectA temporary redirect that keeps the same request method.
  • 308Permanent RedirectA permanent redirect that keeps the same request method.
  • 400Bad RequestThe server cannot understand the request, for example because of a wrong format.
  • 401UnauthorizedYou need to log in. No valid credentials were sent.
  • 402Payment RequiredReserved for payment systems. Rarely used.
  • 403ForbiddenThe server understood the request but refuses it. Logging in will not help.
  • 404Not FoundThe server cannot find this page or file.
  • 405Method Not AllowedThis address does not accept this request method, such as POST.
  • 406Not AcceptableThe server cannot give an answer in a format the client accepts.
  • 407Proxy Authentication RequiredYou must log in to the proxy first.
  • 408Request TimeoutThe server waited too long for the request.
  • 409ConflictThe request clashes with the current state of the resource.
  • 410GoneThe page was removed on purpose and will not come back.
  • 411Length RequiredThe request needs a Content-Length header.
  • 412Precondition FailedA condition in the request headers was not met.
  • 413Content Too LargeThe request is bigger than the server accepts, for example an upload.
  • 414URI Too LongThe web address is longer than the server accepts.
  • 415Unsupported Media TypeThe server does not accept the file or data format that was sent.
  • 416Range Not SatisfiableThe requested part of the file does not exist.
  • 417Expectation FailedThe server cannot meet the Expect header of the request.
  • 418I'm a teapotA joke code from 1998: the server is a teapot and refuses to make coffee.
  • 421Misdirected RequestThe request was sent to a server that cannot answer it.
  • 422Unprocessable ContentThe request is well formed, but the content is not valid.
  • 423LockedThe resource is locked (WebDAV).
  • 425Too EarlyThe server will not risk handling a request that could be replayed.
  • 426Upgrade RequiredThe client must switch to another protocol first.
  • 428Precondition RequiredThe server wants the request to be conditional.
  • 429Too Many RequestsToo many requests in a short time. Slow down and try again later.
  • 431Request Header Fields Too LargeThe request headers are too big.
  • 451Unavailable For Legal ReasonsThe page is blocked for legal reasons.
  • 500Internal Server ErrorSomething went wrong on the server. A general error without more detail.
  • 501Not ImplementedThe server does not support what the request asks for.
  • 502Bad GatewayA server in between got an invalid answer from the server behind it.
  • 503Service UnavailableThe server is overloaded or down for maintenance. Try again later.
  • 504Gateway TimeoutA server in between did not get an answer in time from the server behind it.
  • 505HTTP Version Not SupportedThe server does not support this HTTP version.
  • 507Insufficient StorageThe server has no room left to store the request (WebDAV).
  • 508Loop DetectedThe server found an endless loop while handling the request (WebDAV).
  • 511Network Authentication RequiredYou must log in to the network first, such as a public Wi-Fi portal.

Frequently asked questions

What do the number groups mean?

1xx is information, 2xx means success, 3xx is a redirect, 4xx is an error on the client side such as a wrong address, and 5xx is an error on the server.

What is the difference between 301 and 302?

301 means a page moved for good, so search engines move to the new address. 302 means a temporary move, so the old address stays the main one.

What does a 404 mean?

The server cannot find the page. The address may be mistyped, or the page was removed or moved.

What is the difference between 401 and 403?

401 means you are not logged in. 403 means the server knows who you are but you are not allowed in.
