How to Extract Text from a PDF (and Why Scans Need OCR)

Updated October 2026

You want the words from a PDF in a document, an email or a spreadsheet, and selecting them by hand does not work. Extracting the text takes a few seconds and can be done on your own device, so the file never leaves your computer or phone. There is one catch: it only works if the PDF contains real text.

Extract text in three steps

  1. Open the PDF to Text tool.
  2. Choose your PDF or drag it onto the page and wait a moment while it is read.
  3. Copy the text, or download it as a .txt file.

You can add markers that show where each page starts. That helps when you need to find your way back to the original.

Why do I get no text?

A PDF can hold text in two very different ways:

Type of PDFWhat is insideText extraction
Digital PDF (saved or exported from a document)Real textWorks
Scanned PDF (made with a scanner or a phone camera)A picture of each pageGives nothing, because there is no text to read

A quick check: try to select a word in your PDF viewer. If you can highlight single words, the PDF has real text. If a whole page highlights as one block, it is a picture.

What to do with a scanned PDF

A scan needs OCR (optical character recognition), which is software that reads the picture of the text and turns it into real text. PDF to Text does not do OCR, it reads real text only. If you need text from a scan, use an OCR program or the scan feature of your phone's notes or camera app.

If you only need the pages as pictures, for example to put them in a presentation, you can save them as images instead.

What to expect from the result

  • Line breaks are kept where possible.
  • Columns, tables, fonts and images are not kept, because plain text cannot hold them.
  • Text in a table can come out in an unexpected order. Check numbers against the original.
  • Special characters and ligatures usually come through fine, but read the result once before you use it.

Privacy

The PDF is read in your browser and the text never leaves your device. That makes it a reasonable choice for contracts, payslips and other documents you would rather not send to an unknown server.
