How to Convert WebP to JPG (and Why You Get WebP)

Updated October 2026

You saved a picture from a website and it turns out to be a .webp file that your program will not open, or a form refuses to accept. WebP is a perfectly good format, it is just not understood everywhere yet. Converting it to JPG or PNG takes a few seconds and can be done without uploading the picture.

Convert WebP to JPG in four steps

  1. Open the WebP Converter.
  2. Choose your WebP image, or drag it onto the page.
  3. Pick JPG as the format to convert to. Pick PNG if the image has a transparent background.
  4. Download the result.

What is WebP, and why do I get it?

WebP is an image format made for the web. At a similar quality it usually gives smaller files than JPG and PNG, and it supports transparency. Websites like it because smaller images load faster, so when you save a picture from a site you often get a WebP file.

All current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge can show WebP. Some older programs and some upload forms cannot, and that is when converting back helps.

Transparency matters here. JPG cannot be transparent, so transparent areas are filled with white. If you need to keep the transparent background, convert to PNG.

Quality and file size

A JPG is saved with a quality setting. Around 90 percent looks the same as the original for a photo, and about 75 percent gives a clearly smaller file with little visible difference. Because JPG is an older format, a converted file can end up larger than the WebP it came from. That is normal.

The other direction

The same tool also turns JPG and PNG into WebP, which is useful for your own website. For a JPG made from a PNG, the PNG to JPG converter does one thing and nothing else.
