Age is usually given in years, but the number of days you have lived is more fun, and it is exact. This guide shows how to work it out, when your 10,000th day arrives and how leap years change the count.
Calculate your age in days
- Open the Age Calculator.
- Enter your date of birth.
- Read the total in days, next to the age in years, months and days.
Doing it by hand
Multiply the full years by 365, add one day for every leap day you lived through, then add the days since your last birthday. It works, but it is easy to slip. A calculator counts the real days between the two dates.
As a rough check, multiply your age in years by 365.25. A person of 30 is about 10,957 days old.
Leap years
A leap year has 366 days, with 29 February. Years divisible by 4 are leap years, except century years that are not divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2028 are leap years, 2100 is not. This is why 365.25 is the average length of a year in the short run.
Example: the 10,000th day
Someone born on 15 June 1990 reached 10,000 days on 31 October 2017, at the age of 27. The 15,000th day falls on 10 July 2031. Round numbers like 1,000, 10,000 and 20,000 days are popular dates to celebrate.
Age in years, months and days
The usual age is counted in full years first, then full months, then the remaining days. Because months have different lengths, this is not the same as dividing the total number of days by 30.
Someone born on 29 February has a birthday on 28 February in years without a leap day.
Days between any two dates
To count the days between two other dates, for example from the day you started a job to today, use the Date Difference Calculator. The guide on days between two dates explains whether the end date counts.
